Meditation
Starting with the physical body Yoga Asana prepares you for pranayama which prepares you for meditation acting like a bridge to the mind. Following these practices you are working through the koshas (layers) of the body and you will soon find you are ready to meditate.
Patanjali's sutras teach us to begin focussing the mind internally and externally to strengthen it. Initially your internal focus will be on the breath (mind and breath work hand in hand) and then externally on an object which is pleasing.
Learning to concentrate and be in the present moment is much harder than it sounds as our monkey mind (jumping, reacting mind) will continually distract us.
When we become focussed and have learned to detach from the mind then other methods of meditation can be experienced such as contemplation on desired positive qualities, witnessing your thoughts, mindfulness in the present moment, visulisation, mantra, enquiry, analysing your thoughts, chakras, senses, prayer. The journey can be intensive but each experience gratifying.
Mastering the initial techniques alone will bring you numerous health benefits and for some that is as much as they wish to experience. The choice is always yours.
Progressing further with your meditation allows you to discover who you really are, your purpose, free you from samskaras (ingrained habits), modify your karma and negative thinking.
Living on this earth becomes easier, beautiful and prescious as you become more intuitive to the realisation that we are more than just our body or thoughts............................!
This amazing unveiling and purifying gives us a glimpse perhaps only in fleeting moments that we are all part of one energy.
The aftermath : answers to our questions, imense joy, peace and well being .
